A Depleted Jesuit Rugby Team Triumphs Over Old Foe Lamorinda

Missing a number of starters due to injury, illness and other commitments, a scrappy Jesuit Varsity rugby team was able to overcome a tough Lamo team.

Senior Mason Phillips, standing in at Flyhalf, started the scoring with a well-taken penalty to give Jesuit the early lead.  Lamo came right back with some strong running to score a converted try and take the lead.

Jesuit then was able to take advantage of a yellow card after a high tackle on Senior Wing Kevin Wells to get a try created by strong forward play.  The conversion was missed, but Jesuit had regained the lead.

The forwards led by Donovan Horst and Max Sackett were able to grind out another try close line that gave Jesuit some breathing room.  Phillips then hit another penalty to make it a 16-7 game. Lamo was not done and they punched in a try with some big carries near the Jesuit line.  That made it two-point game.

Strong defensive pressure by Jesuit allowed Wing James Bayard to intercept and dot down under the posts. Philips converted to close the game out.

Final Score Jesuit 23 – Lamo 14

“As the saying goes ‘Next Man Up’ and that is exactly what we have at the moment,” said Head Coach John Shorey. “We had a few players like John O’Brien and Carson Harthun put their hand up today and players like George Miller, Mason Phillips and James Bayard step up to play multiple positions. This is what we need to see as we build into the season.”
