Jesuit Salvadoran Martyrs
35th Anniversary
We prayerfully remember those who died for their faith on this day, and pray for justice and peace in our world.
On November 16, 1989, at the University of Central America in El Salvador, six Jesuits and two of their companions were murdered by members of the Salvadoran military. Their crime? Speaking out on behalf of those who were vulnerable, marginalized and persecuted. The Jesuits, all academics, were: Ignacio Ellacuría, Segundo Montes, Ignacio Martín-Baró, Juan Ramón Moreno, Amando López, and Joaquín López y López, founder of the Fe y Alegría network of schools in El Salvador; along with their housekeeper Julia Elba Ramos and her daughter, Celina Ramos.
More than two decades later, their legacy lives on in the work of countless Jesuit organizations and Ignatian communities inspired to live a faith that does justice.
