Appeal stalls Planning Commission’s unanimous approval of project
Spring 2024 Stadium Lighting project update

News

Jesuit High School Sacramento’s stadium lighting project was heard by the Sacramento County Planning Commission on March 11, 2024. The commission voted unanimously to approve the installation of permanent stadium lights at Marauder Stadium, marking a significant milestone for the school and its athletic program. Despite the Commission’s approval, Jesuit learned just before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, the last day to appeal, that an individual opposing the project filed an appeal and requested to be heard in front of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors at a date yet to be determined.

“Jesuit will continue earnestly to advance our request for permanent lights, as the need to protect players and spectators is great,” stated Chris Alling, president of Jesuit High School Sacramento. “I am incredibly grateful for the tremendous effort the Jesuit staff and trustees have put forth. I was moved to witness so many passionate parents, students, and alums share their stories at the Planning Commission in support of lights. Together, we will continue to propel this project forward.”

The effort to seek a Use Permit Amendment for permanent lighting began in 2021 and has gone through an exhaustive environmental review and the many phases of the county’s required processes.

Established over 60 years ago, Jesuit Sacramento has long been a pillar of academic and athletic excellence in the Sacramento region. Despite its rich history, the absence of permanent stadium lighting has posed challenges for multiple sports, often placing athletes and spectators in harm’s way due to the high heat temperatures during mid-day events.
