Film Club: providing a platform for student creativity

Jesuit High School Sacramento’s Film Club was created to foster a learning environment for all students interested in film. The primary focus of the club is watching films and discussing the components that make them excellent examples of cinema.

Club Moderator Mr. Ted Hornback ’83 believes the club is a great fit for any students looking to hone their filmmaking skills.

“The goal of the club is to inspire and instruct – to explore the techniques that go into making compelling visual narratives,” Mr. Hornback said. “If students want to understand how the film medium works and to develop the skills to improve their own visual storytelling, then the Film Club is definitely for you.”

The Film Club has high hopes for the future. Co-leader Matthew Gilles ’26 looks forward to the possibility of presenting student-made films in a film festival.

“Our purpose is to provide a platform for film and filmmaking at Jesuit,” Matthew said. “We created it with the goal of showcasing a variety of films to students, and hopefully get them inspired to try creating in the process. Our long term goal is developing a student film festival here on campus. Our hope is to create an event that would platform short films made by Jesuit students as well as students at St. Francis and Christian Brothers. The chance to platform the creativity of our students and students at local schools is a unique opportunity I’d like to be a part of.”

For those students who don’t necessarily want to pursue filmmaking, the Film Club still offers an engaging opportunity to enjoy movies.

“It’s a low commitment space to come relax and watch a variety of films,” Matthew said. “For those who want to get more invested and dip into film making, the club provides a place to find people with the same passion who want to collaborate and expand their experience.”

The Film Club offers a welcoming environment for both hardcore cinema enthusiasts and laid back movie-watchers. With big plans for the future, the Film Club will provide a fun and unique way for students from different schools to connect and bond over a common interest.

Whether you’re pursuing a career in filmmaking, or just want to watch a movie during lunch, the film club welcomes you. Meetings are held every Wednesday at lunch in GR 202 – if you are interested make sure to stop by.
