Freshman finding success on the diamond
Varsity baseball at Jesuit High School Sacramento has been
amongst the most competitive programs in the Northern California
area, with many players signing with top collegiate programs and
eventually finding their way into Major League Baseball. Because
of this competitive history, when a freshman makes the Varsity
squad, it’s noticed.
Samuel “Sammy” Kane ’26 has been determined to advance in the sport he loves since he was four years old, and so he is thrilled to have this chance to prove and improve his game.
“Varsity has been a great experience so far and as a team, I want to accomplish winning a section [title]. For myself, I want to keep developing and attacking my weaknesses,” Sammy said.
As a freshman on varsity, Sammy’s success has not gone unnoticed, as people want to follow his successes on the diamond.
“Being one of the only freshmen ever to be on varsity [at Jesuit], the recognition I receive is people coming out to our games and posting on social media about me, as well as older Jesuit players reaching out and saying congratulations,” Sammy said.
Sammy has been successful on both sides of the field. So much so, he has caught the full attention of the Head Varsity Baseball Coach Joe Potulny ’76.
“I’m amazed,” Coach Potulny said. “Beyond physical talent, he is well beyond his years. [He has the] best approach in practice of any hitter in the program this year, freshman through senior. Maturity-wise, he is [also] well beyond his years, obviously not intimated walking in cold turkey as a freshman. I would expect he will be a leader the next 3 years.”
Sammy’s mindset has also been a crucial factor in his success. Coach Potulny has noticed his dedication to baseball, and sees why Sammy will be successful at the next level.
“He has the mindset beyond most seniors of what it’s gonna take to play at the next level,” Coach Potulny said. “He knows what he wants to do, he doesn’t shy away from repetitions, and he listens too.”
Sammy is a rising young talent who looks to impact the baseball field in the upcoming years, and he is hoping to establish a name for himself as a ball player and leader.
