Jesuit baseball sweeps Sheldon in three-game series
With hopes of finishing the baseball season with the best record in the Delta League, the Jesuit High School Sacramento Marauders needed a strong performance in their three-game series against the Sheldon High School Huskies.
Sweeping the series with wins of 5-3, 18-0, and 7-6, Jesuit did exactly what it set out to do. Those three-straight victories pushed their Delta League winning percentage over .500, with a record of 5-4.
Jesuit outfielder Carsen Keim ’21 thought he and his team learned a lot from the last three games.
“I would say our performance was good, but we still left a lot on the field,” Carsen said. “Although we won all three games, two of the three games were too close for our liking. It was fun to win, but we can’t be complacent as we still have a lot more games to play… I feel our team has learned from this and we are ready for the next games and not to undervalue any team.”
Pitcher and catcher Drake Bicknell ’21, along with pitcher and first baseman Devon Walczykowski ’21 played pivotal roles in Jesuit’s three wins against Sheldon. Drake went 6-for-9 at the plate in the series, driving in six runs and hitting a home run.
Devon threw a complete-game shutout in the second game of the series — striking out seven hitters across seven innings. Devon even managed to do some damage at the plate as he had 5 RBIs in the three games and got a walk-off hit in the third game.
Devon himself noticed something was different about these games, expressing his pleasure with how he and his team played in the games.
“Our team’s performance against Sheldon was great,” Devon said. “I feel like we hit really well, especially on Thursday in our 18-0 win. Our starting pitchers also threw great games. Class of 2022, Jaxson German really stepped it up for our team … They were three great team wins all around. I didn’t have my best game at the plate on Tuesday, but I did good the other two games … I was seeing the ball really well and was also able to locate great on the mound.”
With this sweep over Sheldon under their belts, the Marauders are ready to charge ahead in their next three-game series of the season against Elk Grove High School, with the first of these games starting on May 4 at 4 p.m.
