Jesuit choirs spread Christmas cheer at Winter Choral Concert
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s three choirs will unite for one of their biggest performances of the year. The men’s choir, concert choir, and chamber choir are welcoming people to attend their joint Winter Concert performance at the Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.
The concert will feature all three levels of Jesuit’s choir singing a variety of Christmas-themed pieces – all of which will be tied together by the concert’s theme, “Brightest and Best”.
“This year’s theme is ‘Brightest and Best,’” said Choral Director Mr. David Vanderbout. “God blesses us with both sacred [and] secular blessings. And so our music will represent that. We do all styles of music – everything from classical, to folk songs, to multicultural music, to pop hits that people will know, and everything in between – and I think people really enjoy that as part of our concerts.”
This concert is the culmination of a semester of hard work for all the students, who have been diligently memorizing lyrics and honing their singing abilities. In the lead-up to the event, the performers have been working harder than ever to chase musical perfection.
“For most concerts, specifically in chamber choir, Mr. Vanderbout will ramp up the pace and frequency of our rehearsals,” said chamber choir singer Matteo Andrade ’26. “For chamber choir, on usual weeks we meet only three times a week, but in weeks leading up [to the concert] we’ll meet every day, 7:10 until 8:15 a.m. We’ll speed up the pace and try to get as much time rehearsing as possible.”
Matteo believes that the event is a good introduction to choral performances and serves as a great way for audiences to get into the spirit for the season.
“The goal: spreading Christmas cheer,” Matteo said. “We want to get everyone in the spirit. But it’s also just another opportunity for choir members to get more familiar with – especially the freshmen and those [for whom] this is their first year in choir – the performance environment and the community.”
The Winter Choral Concert is a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit and support Jesuit’s choir. Entry to the concert is free. If you’re interested in attending, show up at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11, at the Our Lady of Assumption parish to experience the brightest and best of the holiday season.
