Jesuit falls to Granite Bay in first league game
On Friday, Sept. 21, 2024, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity football team lost to Granite Bay High School 17-30.
Midway through the first quarter, the first touchdown of the game was scored by GBHS wide receiver Darnell Turner ’26 on a 17-yard pass completion. GBHS kicker Jimmy Deslaruier kicked in extra point to make the score 7-0 GBHS.
The subsequent kick return for Jesuit put the team on the 33-yard line. After a 38-yard pass from quarterback Teddy Rios ’26 to wide receiver Ryan Reeves ’26, kicker Yudiel “Dragon” Mondragon ’26 completed a 20-yard field goal. The first quarter finished 7-3 in favor of GBHS.
The second quarter started with a 61-yard pass to GBHS running back Isaiah Ene for a touchdown two minutes in. After the extra point, the score was 14-3 GBHS. Jesuit’s next possession almost ended with a punt, but punter Cannon Davey ’25 successfully executed a fake punt, putting Jesuit on their own 42-yard line. Capitalizing on the opportunity, running back Chris Effiong ’25 ran for a 39-yard touchdown shortly after. With the extra point, the score was now 14-10 Jesuit with 8 minutes left in the second quarter.
On GBHS’s next drive, linebacker Jack Patock ’25 intercepted GBHS’s pass on Jesuit’s 26 yard line to create another scoring opportunity for Jesuit. Unfortunately, Jesuit could not capitalize, as Turner intercepted a long pass and took it all the way for a 48 yard-pick 6.
GBHS gained possession again with under a minute left of the second quarter, and scored a 28-yard field goal. The score at half time was 24-10 Granite Bay.
In the second half, a quick start from Jesuit led to a 4 yard rushing touchdown from Jack, and Dragon kicked in the extra point making the score 24-17 GBHS. Other than a few penalties the uneventful quarter finished with a score of 24-17.
After the fourth quarter began, Jesuit turned over the ball on downs to GBHS at their 4-yard line. This turnover allowed Ene to score yet another touchdown, and Deslaurier’s extra point made the score 30-17 GBHS. The game finished with a final score of 30-17 in favor of GBHS.
Teddy finished the game with 150 passing yards and 12 rushing yards. Jack Patock finished the game with a total of 15-rushing-yards and 1 touchdown, while Chris had 60-rushing-yards and 1 touchdown.
