Jesuit High School Sacramento’s wrestling team has just wrapped up a successful season, culminating with Captain Logan Nguyen ’25 becoming the third Jesuit wrestler to make section finals in program history.

While Logan soared above all expectations, there were many other stand out wrestlers, including Max Troppman ’25, who showed skill and growth during the season, landing him a spot in the Masters Tournament alongside Logan.

“[The team] exceeded their expectations this year by far,” said Wrestling Head Coach Chris Carlino. “In particular, Logan and Max did an excellent job, and many other guys on the team did an excellent job as well.”

While the team was led by very experienced coaches and captains, the majority of the team was underclassmen. Having a freshman and sophomore heavy team can come with struggles, but the coaching staff and returning wrestlers used it as an opportunity to foster growth on the team.

“We had a very underclass heavy team,” Logan said. “And if you just saw the improvement from our first dual meet to how we ended the season, it’s incredible.”

In addition to improving in skill and strength, the team also improved their team chemistry, becoming a close knit group of wrestlers and coaches.

“I’ve seen the team grow closer together this season in terms of friendships and in terms of team spirit,” Max said. “Their skills have greatly improved too. We have quite a young team with new wrestlers, and I’m excited to see them return and continue wrestling in the future. We have a wonderful coaching staff who’s extraordinarily experienced and very helpful when it comes to teaching new wrestlers and improving the skills of current wrestlers as well.”

While the team had many successes throughout the season, they had their fair share of setbacks in the form of injury and sickness, causing a few key wrestlers to miss up to the whole season.

“This season, we have had a few injuries and a few illnesses that have, unfortunately, kept some of our starting wrestlers from performing at their peak,” Max said. “It has caused some of them to miss their [entire] season as well.”

Despite those setbacks, the season has been a success. With all of the growth seen this year, and a team mostly made up of underclassmen, Coach Carlino is hopeful for a successful future.

“I think the goals [for next year] would be to continue on the path that we are on and just become more of an established program, having guys that stick with [wrestling],” Coach Carlino said.

The Jesuit wrestling team has showcased remarkable growth and resilience this season. With coaches fostering growth within the team, and a strong foundation being built for the underclassman, the team and coaching staff are on a road to many more historic seasons.
