LMU: A small campus in a big city

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is a private Jesuit college located in Los Angeles, California. When I visited, I saw the small yet beautiful campus and a few of the landmarks that made the university stand out from others.

LMU has 7,000 undergraduate students and 2,800 graduate students on their 142 acre campus. LMU is one of top ranked film colleges in the nation and has a great STEM program as well. The school has a teacher to student ratio of 11-to-1, allowing students to have closer discussions and relationships with their professors.

LMU requires first year students to live on campus in the dorms. While visiting, I was able to see my brother’s room, which was a nice size for a dorm. Aside from the dorms, the different housing options are the residence dorms, suites, and apartments. The sticker price for on-campus students is $89,487 per year.

In my opinion, the best part about LMU was its campus, which has many breathtaking views. When I arrived, the first thing that stood out was being able to see the city from the top of the bluff on which the campus sits.

In the library, there was a huge window that you could look out of and see the beautiful Los Angeles (LA), California skyline. The church that was on campus was beautiful, with stunning interior murals.

LMU has an open field that takes up most of the middle of the campus, making the school less congested. The rest of the buildings were a nice mix of modern and antique.

Like any college LMU also has a few drawbacks. The first downside was the traffic in LA. Even though the immediate area around LMU did not have that much traffic, I would definitely get annoyed trying to travel through the actual city of LA.

Another negative factor was the fact that the smaller campus is limiting. When I was there, I felt as if most of the entertaining things to do were off campus.

Overall, I found that the strengths of LMU outweighed the weaknesses. The beautiful campus and the nice surrounding area really won me over. I would say if you enjoy a smaller student body and big city life, then LMU would be a good fit for you.
