Open Mic Night: entertainment for all
On Friday, Feb. 28, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s Asian Pacific Islander Club (APIC) will host its annual Open Mic Night in the Harris Center. This event offers high school students from across the Sacramento area a chance to showcase their talents, socialize with friends, and enjoy a variety of foods prepared by student clubs.
“I joined APIC last year when I was a freshman since I wanted to find a community at Jesuit that shared the same cultural similarities and experiences as me,” said Owen Hartono ’27. “Open Mic Night is a fun event where students and their families can come to watch a variety of performances, including cultural ones, such as the St. Francis’ hula team and Tinikling dance, as well as music performances from different students.”
Open Mic Night isn’t exclusively for APIC students. Students from other local high schools, including Saint Francis High School, are invited to attend and perform, making it a fun and inclusive event for all.
“Students should know that Open Mic isn’t just for APIC members,” said APIC co-president Nathan Lee ’26. “It isn’t just a night for our culture, but it is a conglomerate of talent that we like to celebrate.”
Planning Open Mic Night is no small task. From working with other schools, to creating a menu with a diverse range of food, to managing performers’ auditions, there are a lot of moving parts. Despite these obstacles, APIC’s leadership team has worked hard to make this year’s event a success.
“Under the leadership of Jayden Canio and Nathan Lee, I’ve seen both of these people lead the club to success,” said Club Moderator Mr. Jonathan Isaac. “They’ve been doing their best to advertise, collaborate, and set up the frame of this year’s Open Mic Night. They’ve been able to overcome obstacles of food, equipment, setup, and collaborations with an optimistic mindset, all for the success of the event.”
Looking ahead, the APIC team hopes to make Open Mic Night an even bigger event in the future.
“The goals for future Open Mic Night events is to grow and make the event even bigger,” Mr. Isaac said. “[That] means more acts, more food, and more fun. We want this event to be very memorable for both audiences and acts.”
In addition to celebrating talent, Open Mic Night also gives back to a worthy cause. Proceeds from the event will go to supporting the devastating fires in Los Angeles.
