Opinion: March Madness, the pinnacle of American sports
The college basketball season may start in November, but for the majority of the country College basketball does really start until March. With its upsets, incredible finishes, and the births of basketball legends, March Madness is the greatest sporting event in America.
One of March Madness’ greatest traits is the amount of upsets, as smaller colleges get matched up with basketball powerhouses. Over the years, there have been many teams that have gone on incredible runs such as Saint Peters, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and Loyola Chicago. Before their runs through the tournament, these colleges were mostly unknown.
March Madness has given these institutions opportunities to grow in the world of sports, which is unlike any other tournament in any sport. Nobody had heard of Oakland University or University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) before their legendary victories. Oral Roberts, a team who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2021, saw a spike in applicants because of their run, showing the impact March Madness can have on individual schools.
March Madness also has some of the most invigorating finishes in the sports world. There are many examples of this, such as last year when Colorado hit a game winner over Florida, or when Kris Jenkins of Villinova hit a game winning three in the national championship in YEAR. These moments are some of the most spectacular in sporting history.
March Madness also gives birth to legendary players. Jack Gohlke, Ja Morant, and Stephen Curry are just a couple of big names who rose to the occasion during the tournament. The tournament has such a large impact that someone from a small school is able to obtain a contract because of his performance. No other sporting event allows players to step up out of nowhere and become some of the best players in college.
March Madness is a great sporting event in every aspect; there is nothing else like it.
