With spring sports already underway, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s varsity tennis team has displayed impressive skill and depth as they begin their quest for a Section Championship.

After starting off the season with a scrimmage against McClatchy High School, Jesuit trounced Rocklin High School 9-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

“I challenged [the team] to come out and have better intensity than the other team from the first point,” said Tennis Head Coach Matthew Brunner. “Right when the match started, we were loud, we were energetic, and I think we really overran [Rocklin] with that energy.”

Then, on Thursday, Feb. 27, Jesuit won in a shutout again, beating Folsom High School 9-0. Their immediate success is the byproduct of an offseason of hard work.

“[Our strengths are] definitely our depth and work ethic,” Coach Brunner said. “We have a lot of players that have been training year-round since last year, trying to get better for this season, and it showed. We have 17 players in the varsity team competing for 12 spots in the lineup, and it’s really competitive.”

While that competition inside of a roster could tear some teams apart, that isn’t the case for Jesuit tennis; rather, they’ve bonded as a team, collectively improving and moving towards their goal.

“We experience a brotherhood on the team,” said Team Captain Ethan Rogers ’25. “Everybody’s competing together and with each other, we’re pushing ourselves to be a better player on and off the court. And I think that’s really important for the team environment.”

With two decisive victories under their belts, Jesuit tennis looks to be poised for a successful season. Their next match is on Tuesday, March 4, against Granite Bay High School.
