Zac Koerner, Three-Time CIF Section Champion Water Polo Coach, Leaving Jesuit to Coach at American River College
Jesuit High School of Sacramento Water Polo Head Coach Zac Koerner shared this week that he is stepping down. He has led the Marauders for the last eight years. Koerner will continue to work in his sport at American River College as the head coach of the water polo program.
“Coach Koerner has built the Jesuit Water Polo program into one of the largest programs in the Sacramento area and one of the most successful programs over his tenure,” Jesuit Athletic Director Hank Weinberger said. “We are very proud of what Coach Koerner has accomplished and are very sad but proud to see him move on in his professional career.”
Over the last eight years, Coach Koerner has led the program to 121 wins, including four consecutive CIF-Norcal appearances, three CIF-Sac Joaquin D1 Section titles (including an 8-7 double OT victory over Davis this past season), and three Delta League titles. Coach Koerner has helped develop dozens of top college recruits from his program. This success was vividly evident in the fall of 2022, having ten water polo athletes playing in college. Before Jesuit, Koerner coached at the University of the Pacific and internationally for the United States Youth National Team.
Principal Dr. Michael Wood ‘99 shared, “Coach Koerner has been a model of leadership and professionalism in his work at Jesuit. The Water Polo program has grown tremendously under his leadership, and we are grateful for the years he devoted to the student-athletes under his care.”
As shared last fall, Koerner’s coaching talents have not gone unnoticed, and he joined the American River College athletics department to coach the men’s team last August. His club, high school, and collegiate-level connections and overall respect in the water polo community have allowed Koerner to build a solid coaching staff at all levels of Jesuit’s program.
“While I am excited for the opportunity at American River College; unfortunately, the time demands on my family are too great in the fall to continue coaching both programs,” Koerner told AD Weinberger. “I am grateful that my new position at the college will allow me to continue coaching with the American River Water Polo Club, which will have me working with many Maruader athletes during their club season. I will continue to support Jesuit Water Polo in any way that I can in the future.”
The Marauders will begin off-season conditioning next week under the direction of Sports Performance Coordinator Jay Nacionales and Junior Varsity Coach John Joyce. Jesuit Athletics has already started recruitment for a new head coach. The current high-caliber coaching staff of the last several years will continue to lead the Marauders’ top-notch program.
“I want to thank the athletes and families for their trust and dedication to Jesuit Water Polo. It has been a privilege to work with each of them.” Coach Koerner
In closing, Koerner added, “It has been an honor to coach at Jesuit for the past eight years. This community has been a blessing for my family and me. It is impossible to express my gratitude to the faculty and staff who supported me at Jesuit. I especially want to thank the coaches who have mentored our athletes. Go, Big Red!”
