On Tuesday, Feb. 13, Jesuit High School Sacramento’s nationally ranked varsity soccer team faced off against Central Valley High School. Jesuit is ranked number one in the section and CVHS was ranked number 12. With great games from midfielder James Andrew ’24 and forward Kellen Jacot ’24, Jesuit won 3-1 and remains strong as the playoffs progress.

The Marauders started off strong, keeping CVHS scoreless for the first half while Jesuit scored twice. The first goal was kicked about halfway through the first half from Kellen, and the second followed fairly quickly by James. Jesuit was controlling the game, and it was clear who had the advantage.

“I thought we played well and started the game off strong,” James said. “We weren’t able to capitalize on big chances early on but dominated from the first whistle. As the game progressed, and especially after the first goal, I knew we would be fine for the rest of the game.”

CVHS didn’t score until there were roughly 15 minutes left in regulation, making the score 2-1 Jesuit. After surrendering the goal, Jesuit maintained control of the ball for the most part, although CVHS came close to tying the game. 

Well into stoppage time, a breakaway led to James’s second goal of the outing. With time running out fast, and a two-goal deficit to make up, CVHS proved unable to make a comeback. 

The final whistle blew after a CVHS corner kick, and Jesuit advanced to the next round of the section playoffs. It was a strong offensive outing for the Marauders, using their physical advantages to overcome the visitors. 

“We excelled in transition moments and in starting our attacks quickly,” James said. “They couldn’t deal with our speed and size and we knew that going into the game.”

In addition to offense, James believes that Jesuit’s defense delivered, which is not uncommon for the Mauraders, who have only allowed ten goals in the entire 22-game season. 

“Our backline also defended solidly like usual and prevented opportunities for Central Valley to score,” James said. 

With an excellent offense and a consistent defense, the Marauders only lost one game on the season, and the team’s performance has attracted a large group of spectators at home games. 

“The environment was great,” said Head Coach Paul Rose. “I felt we were supported by the fans.”

With a supportive crowd and a well-rounded roster, the team is ready to beat any team in the section.

“I feel that we are capable of future success,” Coach Rose said. “If we fall short, we will have beat ourselves as much as someone else defeating us.”
