In a decisive yet relatively low-scoring game against Rio Americano High School, Jesuit High School Sacramento defeated their Carmichael rivals on the hardwood, winning the “Battle for American River Drive.” The game ended with a final score of 51-38 and gave Jesuit their 16th win on the season.

Jesuit missed their per game scoring average by 15 on Jan. 27. 

“We struggled on offense in this game,” said Coach Timothy Kelly. “I give credit to Rio for their defensive game plan. But, we managed to make some shots when it was needed.”

The team got off to a slow start, but they stuck with it despite the situation.

“We did a good job of not panicking.” Coach Kelly said. “It is easy to panic in that environment when you don’t get off to a good start. We managed to stay steady the whole game knowing that we will make some shots eventually.” 

The team’s stats on the night were mediocre compared to how they usually play. One specific area of lack was getting rebounds.

“We need to improve our rebounding,” Coach Kelly said. “It has been a constant area of growth for us all season.”

Forward Asher Schroader played well, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds, an assist, and five blocks in 32 minutes. He led the team in rebounds and blocks, and with four defensive and three offensive boards.

Another area the team seems to be lacking in is assists, with a team total of only seven. While it was enough to secure the win against Rio, in games down the road against tougher opponents the team will need to improve their ball movement and playmaking.
