VPA Student Spotlight
I learned that I will put great effort into the work I care about.
What initially sparked your enthusiasm for your chosen discipline? What else are you involved in at JHS?
During my admissions process, I was faced with the decision of choosing a VPA class, and that’s when I stumbled upon photography. Initially, I was unsure about it, but I decided to give it a try. It was something different from the other VPAs I had taken in middle school, and I fell in love with photography.
I am also the art coordinator for our school newspaper, The Plank. It’s my second year with The Plank, and I was the head photographer last year. I am also the co-leader of the photography club with my friend, Cole Arnold, whom I have known since 1st grade.
In addition to my passion for photography, I have been playing baseball for the past two years at Jesuit. In my sophomore year, I managed the JV team, and this year, I hope to make the varsity team as a player. However, if that doesn’t work out, I would still love to remain involved with the team in a managerial role.
Could you share a specific experience that brought you joy in the Arts?
During my freshman year, a picture of mine was chosen to appear on the cover of Moorings. It was during this time that I took one of my favorite photos ever, which I called “Orange Maple.” Initially, I wasn’t very proud of the picture, but my perspective changed when Dr. Madden showcased a collection of student photos hung in the main office to our class. To my surprise, my picture was included among them. This recognition made me appreciate my art more and realize that I should be proud of my work. I am not one to sing my own praises, but I must admit that my photos are pretty good most of the time. When my image was chosen for Moorings, I was over the moon with excitement. It made me realize that I have a talent in photography that I need to keep pursuing.
What project, artwork, or performance has made you feel the most proud?
During Quarter 4 of my freshman year, I worked on a Master Photographer assignment that made me feel extremely proud. The assignment required me to research an artist and take photos of their style. I chose to honor my Uncle Alessandro Baccari Jr. who had passed away a year earlier. Although my photos were not my best work, it was a great experience to be able to pay tribute to my uncle through my photography.
Why would you encourage future students to join your Visual and Performing Arts Program at JHS?
I would encourage future students to pursue photography, as it is a lifelong hobby that can be practiced anywhere.
