What initially sparked your enthusiasm for your chosen discipline? What else are you involved in at JHS?

Before I moved to Sacramento, my parents took me to see a jazz concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I had frequently listened to classical music with my parents, but I was completely unacquainted with the world of music, and visual performing arts in general. However, the sonorous sound of the cello truly resonated with me, unlike any other instrument I heard. It seemed to express a wide range of emotion, almost like a human voice would. I knew from this moment that this was something I would like to try, so I started playing the cello in elementary school, and still continue to do so to this day.

Could you share a specific experience that brought you joy in the Arts?

One of my best memories playing the cello is when I toured Germany during the summer of 2023 with the Sacramento Youth Symphony, which I rehearse with every week. It was a wonderful experience to be able to play in world-famous venues and create an indelible bond with my fellow peers. During this trip, I learned that music is truly a unifying force that brings people together when words and all other forms of communication fail.

What project, artwork, or performance has made you feel the most proud?

My successful audition into the Premier Orchestra, the highest level of the Sac Youth Symphony has made me the most proud of the immense effort and dedication I put in not just leading up the audition, but during all the years of practice and preparation beforehand. This great achievement reminded me that any goal, within reason is achievable if you truly have the commitment and devotion towards it. When our desire for something is strong enough, we will do anything to get it.

Why would you encourage future students to join your Visual and Performing Arts Program at JHS?

I would definitely encourage future Jesuit Students; musical or not, to join orchestra or band if they have a chance. Not only is it a great opportunity to get acquainted with the music performing arts, but it is also a great way to get to know new people, since you will be playing an instrument in common. Most importantly, you can express yourself in ways that cannot be communicated through words. Playing a musical instrument can be a healthy, and enjoyable lifelong hobby if you discover that you are truly passionate about it.
