Michael Wood is the principal at Jesuit High School. He began his career in Jesuit Secondary Education at Loyola High School in Los Angeles where he spent 12 years as a Theology teacher and Dean of Students.

Michael graduated from Jesuit in 1999 and he shared his motivation for accepting for the position as Jesuit’s principal noting that “It is an honor to return to my alma mater as a leader and colleague to share my strengths, experiences, and passion with the Jesuit ministry of my origin.”

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Board of Trustees of Jesuit High School of Sacramento today provides an update on the conclusion of service of Rev. John P. McGarry, S.J., as President. On the advice of his physicians, Fr. McGarry will be unable to return to Jesuit this year in order to focus on his health and wellness.

Message from the Jesuit High School Leadership,

From the start of the pandemic, Jesuit High School Sacramento has followed the guidance of experts in public health, coordinated with local and state authorities, and committed to a return to campus when it is deemed safe to do so. With the improvement in Sacramento County COVID status to the red tier, Jesuit Sacramento is preparing to begin our phased return to campus. While our remote-learning program has been successful, our students need and want to be on campus; all of us at Jesuit Sacramento have been preparing to reintegrate into in-person learning, but we will only do so in a manner that prioritizes safety, sanity, and sustainability.

A pre-note from Fr. McGarry, S.J.:

As you know, I have been away from campus for five weeks to receive medical treatment for a heart arrhythmia. I responded well to the treatment and time of rest, and I am happy to be returning to Jesuit High School Sacramento this weekend to resume my ministry as President.

Thank you for your prayers and support during my time of recuperation. The Jesuit High School community remained in my heart and prayers while I was away.

Parents, Students, and Friends,

This has been a difficult week in our nation and our city. I am grieved by George Floyd’s killing and the aftermath of violence. As a Jesuit school, we are called to work for justice and reconciliation—and this aspect of our mission has never been more necessary and, perhaps, has never been more difficult.

For more than 200 years, our nation’s Jesuit schools, from middle schools to high schools to universities, have used education as our tool for promoting integral human excellence in our students. This excellence is not for the sake of personal gain, but rather for moral citizenship that seeks to promote justice. This justice requires that we act against the overt yet unrecognized racism that exists in our community and even in our own hearts. Our work takes time, but our work has made a difference for the good. It is still imperfect and ongoing.
